A Five For Fighting kind of day

Originally posted on MySpace on April 21, 2007.

I spent the day driving all over the greater Los Angeles area with one goal in mind...to visit places pertinent to John and Five For Fighting. First stop was Santa Monica Pier in the town of Santa Monica. It was here that the photography for the America Town album was taken. Next, the drive north on the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu, home of Neptune's Net seafood restaurant. I'm assuming John has eaten here before since he chose that location as the scene of a murder in his song California Justice. I thought it would be different to actually take a photo of the alley behind Neptune's Net...most people choose to take pictures of the front of the building, which I did, too. I decided to have lunch here...a combo meal with scallops and fish...very tasty!

Across the street, County Line Beach, also mentioned in the same song. There were quite a few surfers testing their abilities on the moderate waves. On the way back to Los Angeles, I passed by Pepperdine University...I guess that's where that stud in the song attended school before he got capped behind Neptune's Net. At this point, all the driving...I started out in San Diego...had taken up most of my day and it was time to check into my motel. But, I had one more stop... John F. Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, CA. John attended high school here...I snapped a few photos of the main entrance and the grounds.

I was now ready to hear some music. The venue... The Wiltern Theater in downtown Los Angeles. I got there fairly early, but like I expected, the bus was there already. Not only that, John was already there, too...his Mountaineer was parked in front of the bus. I would have liked to talk to him again before the show, but it can't always happen. I took some photos of the theater, then noticed there was already a line forming to get into the show. As soon as I joined it, a gal came up to me and asked if I was Zombcat...My Space name. I said yes, and she said she was Cathy/Catherine...a My Space friend! It was a meeting that was totally unplanned, but we were brought together because of our fondness for John and his music!

In a repeat of Vegas, I ended up sharing real estate right at the front of the stage with Cathy...I scored a primo spot yet again! I can't reiterate enough how rewarding it is to share the experience of attending a Five For Fighting concert with like-minded fans. If you can make it work, DO IT! It's so much more fun that way! As for the concert, the theater was pretty packed, and the audience was attentive and appreciative of John's musical genius.

After the show, I had to find my way back to the motel. It's hard enough to do it during the day when you're by yourself and trying to navigate with a Google map. But, at night, it's even more confusing. I just knew it was going to happen...I got lost! I took a wrong turn, and tried to make it right, but just made it even more wrong. I retraced my path to try again, only to make another wrong turn. I ended up right back where I started, where I tried one last time...and managed to finally make it to my destination. I took me 30 minutes for a 10-minute trip. Now, that was NOT fun!

Tomorrow is mostly a travel day. I have a couple places I want to go...that's why I'm doing the Salt Lake City leg in two days. Just one more show to attend...it's hard to believe this trip is almost over! I don't want it to end...I'm really enjoying myself. Too bad I'm too young to retire...this would be a great way to spend my free time, being a professional groupie!
