I thought it would be kinda fun to reflect back on my groupie road trip in a different way...the hard facts. Some of this stuff is somewhat interesting. Other things...well, you be the judge.
Number of days my road trip lasted: 12
Total miles driven: 3991. Keep in mind, though, I got lost a few times.
Most miles driven in one day: 703. That was my last day...the 10-hour drive to Washington.
Number of times I filled up gas: 14
Total cost for gas on this trip: $569.36
Quarts of oil added: 1. That was after California's Hwy 1.
Home of the craziest drivers: A tie between the southern California freeways, and Interstate 15 between L.A and Las Vegas. There's no such thing as a speed limit.
City of the friendliest people: Grants Pass, OR. Although everyone I encountered on this trip was nice, they went above and beyond...I was impressed!
Road with the most curves: Hwy 1 on the northern California coast. My driving skills and the Blazer were pushed to the limit. It was challenging and exhausting.
Number of Five For Fighting concerts attended: 5
Number of times I talked to John before the shows: 3
Number of times I met the bus at the venues: 3
The best show: The Wiltern in L.A. The combination of a terrific, appreciative audience, excellent sound and lights, a wonderful theater atmosphere and of course, John's outstanding performance made this a memorable experience.
The worst show: 4th & B in San Diego. Everything was fine except the concertgoers in general. The background noise was horrendous...mostly from the bar area. Why would you go to a concert if you want to socialize? It's about the music!!!
Best motel bed: Comfort Inn at the Harbor, San Diego. For a 2-diamond budget motel...pillowtop mattresses!
Worst motel bed: Howard Johnson, Salt Lake City. No mattress pad...a plastic liner! Yikes!
Best fast food burger: In-N-Out double double. If you've never had one, you're missing out!
Worst fast food burger: Carl's Jr breakfast burger. A hamburger with bacon, egg, cheese, fried potatoes and slathered with ketchup...cholesterol heaven!
Most picturesque drive: A toughie, but Hwy 395 in eastern California was beautiful with the Sierra Nevada mountains pretty much the whole way. On the other hand, Redwood Hwy in northern California...nothing looks like a redwood.
Where I encountered the most bugs: Interstate 84 from Utah into Oregon. Why, I have no idea. But, then, there was that freak cloud of something (locusts?) just north of San Diego...about a dozen hit my windshield all at once!
Most sleep I got on this trip: 6 hours
Least amount of sleep: 3 hours
OK, I'm done. My Blazer's going into the shop tomorrow for a well-needed oil change. A car wash is also on the agenda...the salt residue from Utah, the southern California dust and the bugs have made a mess of my nice wax job. It's amazing what you encounter on a road trip.
